چکیده

Regenerative medicine is expected to be a novel therapeutic system in this century [1–3]. The human body consists of 200 cell species generated from immature stem cells. In the 1990s, a treatment transplanting hematopoietic stem cells to replace all blood cells was established and successfully cured leukemia [4]. With this as amodel, stem cell transplantation therapy is being developed to restore the partial loss of organ function [5, 6]. The ultimate goal of regenerative medicine is to replace loss or damaged organs with artificial organs, so-called organ replacement therapy. Technical development to produce “tissues” made of a single cell species modeled on skin, bone, heart muscle, and cornea is advancing, but little development of organs per se has been attempted. In the sections that follow, we discuss why and explain how we are trying with the problems of “tooth regeneration”.

Tooth tissue and organ regeneration using stem cells

Tooth loss or damage, such as that caused by dental caries and periodontal disease, can cause fundamental problems with oral functions. The development of regenerative therapy for tooth tissue repair and whole-tooth replacement is currently considered a novel treatment with the potential to fully recover tooth function. Several mesenchymal stem cell-like cell types have been identified in oral ...

From molecules to mastication: the development and evolution of teeth.

Teeth are unique to vertebrates and have played a central role in their evolution. The molecular pathways and morphogenetic processes involved in tooth development have been the focus of intense investigation over the past few decades, and the tooth is an important model system for many areas of research. Developmental biologists have exploited the clear distinction between the epithelium and t...

Cellular and molecular mechanisms of tooth root development.

The tooth root is an integral, functionally important part of our dentition. The formation of a functional root depends on epithelial-mesenchymal interactions and integration of the root with the jaw bone, blood supply and nerve innervations. The root development process therefore offers an attractive model for investigating organogenesis. Understanding how roots develop and how they can be bio...

Regeneration of Thyroid Function by Transplantation of Differentiated Pluripotent Stem Cells.

Differentiation of functional thyroid epithelia from pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) holds the potential for application in regenerative medicine. However, progress toward this goal is hampered by incomplete understanding of the signaling pathways needed for directed differentiation without forced overexpression of exogenous transgenes. Here we use mouse PSCs to identify key conserved roles for B...
